Asphalt Shingle Systems

Choosing Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles are one of the most popular types of shingles for residential roofing, and for a good reason! They are well-designed to protect your home’s roof and come in hundreds of styles and colors. Asphalt shingles have a long lifespan and are generally easy to install, so contractors can offer this service at an affordable price, keeping you and your wallet happy. There are three main categories of asphalt shingles from which to choose; 3-Tab shingles, dimensional shingles, and luxury shingles. At Bear Brothers Roofing, we are happy to help you understand the differences so you can select the specific type and color of shingle that is best for your roof and your budget.

Luxury Shingles

Luxury shingles are the highest quality asphalt shingles and are designed with the look of cedar shake or natural slate shingles in mind. They are a much more affordable way to get the look of shake or slate at a fraction of the cost and a fraction of the intensive labor required for installation. Many homes with period-style designs look best with shake or slate roofs, but luxury shingles will look just as appropriate. Luxury shingles are heavy and multi-dimensional in texture, creating depth in the look, and more importantly, durability against the elements.

3-Tab Shingles

3-Tab shingles are also known as strip shingles, based on the way the shingles are cut. This is the most basic type of asphalt shingle on the market. They are coated in a single asphalt later giving them a very flat appearance, often compared to the look of slate shingles. This is the original design of asphalt shingles and was the leading choice before the introduction of designer shingles in the 1980s. Today 3-tab shingles are still widely used as an affordable, yet fully functional option. They are lightweight and can generally have a lifespan of about 20 years.

Dimensional Shingles

Dimensional shingles, also known as architectural or laminate shingles, are one of the most popular types of asphalt shingles. They tend to be more durable and appealing to the eye than 3_tab shingles. Dimensional shingles are composed of two or more layers, which gives them a multi-dimensional texture and appearance. The multiple layers also make them extremely durable, allowing their lifespan to extend to 30 years or more. The upfront cost will be a little more than strip shingles, but homeowners can rely on them to withstand the elements, meaning improved warranty protection and less need for replacement after strong winds.

What Are Asphalt Shingles Made Of?

While there are different types of asphalt shingles, they are all made of the same basic core materials.

  • Fiberglass mat: The main portion of the shingles are made of this high-strength material for durability.
  • Asphalt: Asphalt serves as a water-resistant coating, allowing water to run down the roof.
  • Mineral Stabilizers: These are added to the asphalt during processing to increase fire resistance.
  • Granules: Ceramic particles that coat the top of the shingle, providing the desired color and protecting the shingle from UV rays.
  • Back Surfacing: A mineral material on the back of the shingle to help them from sticking together.

Benefits of asphalt shingles

With the combination of the effective properties of asphalt and modern-day engineering practices, homeowners can purchase high-quality and durable shingles in any number of colors. Some shingles even offer extra resistance to hail damage and some fight off algae growth. Asphalt shingles are naturally resistant to fire, making them a smart option for homes built near areas prone to wildfires.
