This is the original design of asphalt shingles and was the leading choice before the introduction of designer shingles in the 1980s. Today 3-tab shingles are still widely used as an affordable, yet fully functional option. They are lightweight and can generally have a lifespan of about 20 years.

- Mineral Stabilizers: These are added to the asphalt during processing to increase fire resistance.
- Granules: Ceramic particles that coat the top of the shingle, providing the desired color and protecting the shingle from UV rays.
- Back Surfacing: A mineral material on the back of the shingle to help them from sticking together.
