Advantages of Tile Roofs
Built to Last
Tile roof systems and Terra Cota style roof systems are often made with concrete molded tiles in today’s standard roofing systems. These tiles are very heavy and require a sturdy roofing frame, but they can last much longer than other roof styles. Tile roofing is not susceptible to rot or insect damage like most wooden roof system bases. Tile roofs are environmentally friendly due to the materials they are made with and the cost-effective production processes. Tile roofing systems are also energy efficient as the dense thermal mass helps to regulate temperatures indoors in the home year-round.
Although many styles resemble terra cotta roofs, there are many modern tile options made with concrete, clay, and slate. Some have a medieval or European look while others have a more traditional or contemporary style. Tile roofs are low maintenance and easy to repair when they are damaged, although repairs are very rare, most manufacturers offer a 50-year warranty on tile roofing products. Tile roofs are also effective at shedding large amounts of rainfall at a single time but are not always great for frequent rainfall or humid climates.
Class-A Fire Rating
One additional advantage to Tile Roofs is the fire rating you could earn for your home. Clay and concrete roofs receive a Class A Fire rating which is a big reason they are popular near the mountains. Research and investigations show that a majority of home fires are started from embers landing on the roof of a non-fire resistant roof causing the home to catch fire. Tile roofs do not curl, rust, or burn and often become more durable the longer they are exposed to the sun. These are all reasons why they are popular here in Colorado!
Various Tile Styles
We offer a variety of tile styles and options for tile roofs. The range of looks will not make you feel limited aesthetically. Tile roofs are common in southwest Colorado and in custom home development based on the aesthetic versatility and extended warranty you can receive on the roof system. The most common style people think of is Spanish style terra cotta roofs. These roofs of the southwest handle heavy rain well but aren’t always best suited for regions with frequent rainfall. Double Roman tiles are often used in Mediterranean architecture and are often made of concrete. Other common tile styles are French, Riviera, and Flat shake tiles. We are happy to consult you on all the options and benefits or disadvantages to different tile styles as you plan your roof design.
